MANY PEOPLE COME TO IOS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO EITHER PARTY OR TO WORK ON THE ISLAND AND PARTY. THE ONES THAT COME TO WORK USUALLY STAY ON THE ISLAND FOR 4 TO 12 WEEKS. IT’S FUNNY HOW MANY OF THESE PEOPLE DEVELOP A COUGH AFTER ABOUT 3 WEEKS OR SO. EVERY ONE SEEMS TO KNOW ABOUT THE INFAMOUS “IOS COUGH”.
LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BACTERIA SOUP MANY BARS WASH THEIR GLASSES IN. ONCE AGAIN, RESTAURANTS AND NIGHTCLUBS ON IOS WASH THEIR DISHES AND GLASSES IN STEAMING HOT DISHWASHERS TO MAKE SURE THEIR CUSTOMERS DO NOT CATCH A BUG. BUT MANY BARS IN THE VILLAGE PRACTICE THE AGE OLD PRACTICE OF WASHING THEIR GLASSES IN COLD, SOAPY WATER OUT OF A BUCKET WITH BRISTLES. NOT ALL OF THEM BUT MANY OF THEM.
IF YOU SUSPECT THAT A BAR YOU ARE VISITING DOES NOT HAVE A DISH WASHING MACHINE, I RECOMMEND STICKING TO BOTTLES OF YOUR FAVORITE BEER OR BREEZER RATHER THAN DRINKING OUT OF THEIR GLASSES. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!!

I've been to Ios and you get the cough within 3 or 4 DAYS of being there! There is a rumor of antifreeze being mixed in with the cocktails and shots which is why you shouldn't by the €1 ones. No idea if it is true though
Damn I've had the fricken cough now for 3 days and it's literally kept me bedridden and the phlegm deluge is getting old. This endemic bug that goes around here is also more than the user friendly word, "cough" suggests; try pain in the joints, weak bones and muscles and a monster headache every time you cough! This grim reaper came at me over night and hit me like a ton of bricks ever since. Hope it ends soon so I can get back to the beach and the gym otherwise waste of money for the monthly pass. Also btw for the record they turn off the water from midnight to 7 am to conserve this limited resource hence the bristle brush and soapy bucket water for the party crowd. Getting better on this third day however! For anyone who gets this, try chopped up ginger root boiled for 10 min as a tea. Helps! Trust me. Keep it healthy everyone!
I've been to IOS three times, and gotten the cough/phlegm each time... within 3-4 days. There are many rumors as to the cause - from spiking the alcohol to the painted sidewalks to the cold soapy water dishwashing tactics. If you go to IOS, you will get the cough. It's largely worth it. ;-)
